You too can be a hero.
It’s simple: make gourmet style chocolate covered strawberries. This will take you less than an hour to make, no baking required, and the fact that you made it with your own two hands will pull on heart strings.
Here’s what you need to do:
Make a trip to the local grocery store.
Your shopping list consists of:
Strawberries (preferably with stems – this project is based on 15 large strawberries)
a bag of chocolate chips – I used milk chocolate, but you can use another kind if you’d like
white chocolate chips or white chocolate baking chocolate – you only need a small amount, and it’s just to decorate (unless you prefer to dip your strawberries in it)
items to roll the strawberries in (your choice):
any kind of chopped nut
Heath toffee bar bits
Let your imagination run wild.
You also need waxed paper or parchment paper.
Let’s begin. Go to youtube and listen to the Underdog theme:
Wash your strawberries and pat dry with a paper towel.
If you bought strawberries with stems, trim any ugly ends off.
Lay parchment or waxed paper out so you can put your strawberries on it to harden. If you want, you can line cookie trays with the paper. If you put them on a cookie tray, you can easily move the strawberries into the refrigerator if you need them to harden quickly.
Pour 1/2 cup of chocolate chips into a microwavable mug or Pyrex measuring cup.
Heat for 30 seconds, and stir. Place back into microwave, stir again until all the chips are melted. If you need to heat it for 30 seconds more, then do so, but you really should attempt to stir the chips enough to melt them first. I found the method of using 1/2 cup of chips and working with small amounts of chocolate and a lowered heating time reduces overheating and making the chocolate unusable. The less time you microwave, the better.
Next, hold your strawberry by the stem and roll it into the chocolate. If your strawberry does not have a stem, you can insert a toothpick into the top to dip it. Hold the strawberry up, and allow the chocolate to drip off of it. .
You can now roll the strawberry into one of your toppings. Place onto waxed paper or parchment paper
If you want to decorate the strawberries with white chocolate, just place the plain chocolate covered strawberry onto the waxed or parchment paper.
As you need more chocolate, repeat the above directions for heating up chocolate. Continue covering the strawberries and adding your toppings until all strawberries are covered.
To decorate with white chocolate, heat up a small amount (you won’t need a lot). Using a spoon, take a small amount of the white chocolate, and lightly drizzle onto your chocolate covered strawberries.
If you wanted to harden the chocolate quickly and used the cookie trays, place them into the refrigerator to harden.
